Understanding BMAP Requirements in Southwest Florida
To help reduce nitrogen levels in Florida’s watersheds, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) introduced the Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP). Under BMAP guidelines, certain properties—especially new construction—are required to use advanced treatment systems that meet NSF-245 standards.
Do BMAP Requirements Apply to You?
-
New Homes: If your property is within the BMAP boundary and less than 1 acre, you are typically required to install an advanced treatment system.
-
Larger Properties: If your property is 1 acre or more, the advanced treatment requirement does not apply, even within the BMAP boundary.
-
Existing Systems: Repairs or modifications to conventional septic systems do not require a conversion to advanced treatment.
